I know that a couple of days have gone by since the derby and despite what turned out to be a very boring affair, Ruben Amorim will have walked away with more positives than negatives, one of which was how involved his new, young wing-back was.
And that's just the thing with Dorgu: he is new and young.
Has he been a revelation at LWB? No. Has he been utter dogshite? No. I feel that Dorgu has done as well as we would've (or should've) expected of a player like him playing in that position.
The Dane has been neither amazing nor poor in his time at the club, which by the way is just 8 matches. Just 8. And people are having a go at him 🤦♂️.
At least he is available unlike some others in the squad and he has given us something that we've been searching for in this team in that left wing-back position. With having to use either Mazraoui or Dalot in that unfamiliar area of the pitch, it means that we did have more of a weak point on that side and also that there was a bit of imbalance given the fact that both of those are right-footed.
Dorgu has given us that balance and in turn, has allowed United and Amorim to play in a manner that is more befitting this system, one in which the wing-backs are so key.
Of course he needs to improve because he can be a bit sloppy and il-disciplined - he received a red card in just his 4th game for the club - but these inconsistencies are to be expected of a young player.
Dorgu is also not coming into the most well-run club, surrounded by many senior pros, or in a side that is playing brilliantly. This is factually the worst Man Utd side in Premier League history and we're asking a young up-and-comer making his first big move to be some sort of savior for us particulalry down the left flank.
Just as a side note, this is exactly what is going to happen should we keep bringing in more players that are young potentials like Dorgu. There's going to be a lot of inconsistencies resulting in a lot of frustration. We know this fan base can be quite impatient. I'm not sure why the club want to sign these young players.
Against City, I thought he was a constant outlet down the left and has been so since he arrived. It isn't his fault that Garnacho doesn't use him as much as he should.
The 20 year old makes regular runs past his number 10 and is always an option yet is very rarely found. When he is, we know that he struggles in the final third and is an area to improve on (which is something that could be said of several players), but he can offer something.
Dorgu had a couple of decent crosses as well as two opportunities of his own. I've noticed that either through his own will or instructions from the manager that he does get in and around the box to be an extra attacker. Dalot never really does as he often keeps to the touchline.
He also created 2 chances and had 7 touches in the opposition box. That's not the worst for a LWB.
Even defensively, he still has work to do but I don't truly worry whenever he has to get back. He also looks to be a strong lad who is very physical and one that we can rely on to be available (touch wood). We know we've had our problems with injury in that position.
Yet people are saying things along the lines of 'he's not good enough' or 'we shouldn't have bought him.'
Again, this is what you're going to get with youngsters. He is only 20 years old for fuck sakes!
And what do you think this will do for his confidence? Imagine being a young player coming into one of the biggest clubs in the world who are categorically crap and in just your 8th match, the fans are talking negatively about you.
This could knock his confidence.
I'm not exactly sure what type of character he is or personality he has. I hope it's a strong one because at United, every little thing you do gets scrutinized even if you're new and young.
So what the fuck do people want?
Dorgu was never going to come in and be Patrice Evra who himself struggled when he too joined in January 2006. Given the fact that Dorgu was a decent player for Lecce, it shows that he had some quality. As he is also familiar with the left-back/left wing-back positions, it meant that we had a hole in our team filled.
I believe we look a lot better with him in the team, definitely a lot better than when Dalot was out there like my god was he trash as LWB 😳.
Can we not talk negatively about new and young players? Can we at least give them a chance? And by chance I don't mean a couple of months or even a season especially when they're that young.
Patrick Dorgu, keep going lad. You're doing a great job. Don't listen to the naysayers. We need you more than not.
