‍Why Barcelona Might Not Want To Keep Marcus Rashford

The United loanee wants to stay at FC Barcelona. He’s said it himself — "that’s the goal."

And on the surface, it looks like it should happen.

New club, fresh start, decent numbers… job done, right?

Not quite.

If you only look at the stats, you’re missing the point

When Rashford first made the move from Old Trafford, it felt like one of those rare situations where everyone wins.

Ruben Amorim clearly didn’t fancy him, the system didn’t suit him, and Rashford himself wanted "a new challenge". Barcelona came in, gave him that platform, and for a while… it worked.

The numbers back that up.

In the Champions League, he started four games and returned 4 goals and 2 assists. In La Liga, there was a run where he scored and assisted in five straight games. Overall, 23 goal contributions in 39 games is more than respectable.

If you stop there, you probably think:

“Why wouldn’t Barcelona keep him?”

But then you actually look at how he’s being used.

Under Hansi Flick, something doesn’t quite add up.

Recently, Rashford hasn’t been starting. Not occasionally — consistently.

The German didn't start him in the last five games in the UCL and even left him on the bench despite being 7-2 up against Newcastle. The likes of Ferran Torres and Dani Olmo were preferred over the Englishman.

In La Liga, starts have been hard to come by as well. In 27 matches, he's started 14, most of which came in the earlier parts of the campaign.

Granted, it would be hard to bench the likes of Raphinha, Lamine Yamal or Robert Lewandowski but even still, I would have thought he'd get more starts.

As a sub, Flick has given Rashford just a handful of minutes as his last two appearances off the bench in the league totalled a combined 25 minutes.

And in-between, he was again left on the bench entirely for the recent wins over Real Oviedo, Levante and Sevilla.

So now the question shifts.

It’s no longer:

“Is Rashford producing?”

It’s:

“Why isn’t the manager trusting him?”

I believe that the Reddit user No_Friendship_4158 sums it up perfectly because when you think about Rashford, he can be quite lazy in terms of his work ethic and pressing. As I said, Ruben Amorim made it very clear about what he'd do if a player doesn't give their all.

I'm a little surprised by all this tbh. I thought that with a fresh start and moving to an easier league with one of the stronger sides in Europe, Rashford will do well.

And for a time, that seemed to be the case. His early form suggested that this move looks to be working. Manager Flick even praised Rashford's mentality calling it "perfect" back in December. "I am so happy to have him" the German added.

Even the style of Flick looked to suit him as it is fast-paced, in your face and very much on the front-foot, which I believe is a brand of football that Rashy can operate in.

Guess I was wrong 🤷‍♂️.

As we know though, our players have their moments during games and throughout a season.

At United, Rashford could have a quiet game and still produce something that wins it.

At Barcelona, that’s not enough.

They don’t want moments.
They want control, consistency, and relentless work without the ball.

And if you don’t give them that, it doesn’t matter how good your numbers look — you’ll sit.

And with a player like Rashford, how many times have we called him inconsistent or a moments player?

As for the deal, there’s talk of Barcelona trying to renegotiate and bring the price to around €30m.

That tells you everything.

Clubs don’t haggle like that for players they’re fully convinced by. If they truly saw Rashford as a key piece, they’d just pay and move on.

Instead, this feels like hesitation.

Let’s be real — the return doesn’t make sense for anyone.

That chapter between Rashford and United looks done, and dragging it back open helps no one. The focus now should be finding a solution that works for all sides, not revisiting something that’s already run its course.

Would you like to see Rashy return? Or has that ship sailed?

Yeah, I can talk and talk and talk about the things I love, like football and United, as you can see in this post. Once I get on a roll, it's pretty hard to stop me. This is all coming from a guy who doesn't talk that much. How weird.
