After what turned out to be an incredible night in Bilbao in which United won 3-0, the United boss did reveal that despite that victory, changes are to be expected for Brentford on Sunday.
The team news was the major topic for discussion. Amorim said that defender Mazraoui is pretty much at breaking point in terms of being injured as he was taken off towards the end of the match last night. He will most likely be out for Sunday's trip. In fact, the manager said that he won't play any players who are at risk of being injured.
He says that it is a risk that they need to take in terms of who to select given the quick turnaround from Bilbao to Brentford. There will be rotation but Amorim still wants to win as it isn't all about just resting players and getting whatever result.
The United boss also spoke about Amad who made a comeback to the side after being out for two months. The Portuguese said that losing Amad at that point was "really tough on us" because he was a key player at that moment in the season.
Another player who was mentioned was Casemiro who has seen quite the resurgence over the past three months. The MUFC manager said that the Brazilian "has improved a lot" and that through this improvement, "he is a very good example." He adds that how Casemiro has turned his form around is a lesson for the rest of the squad.
Final Thoughts
I think we all know the importance of next week hence why Amorim says that we will rotate. Even if we weren't in this situation and in the middle of the season, to go from Thursday to Sunday is such a quick turnaround that rotation was required anyway.
In the situation we're in, it absolutely makes sense to rest players. The league is done. It's been done for a while and as I've been saying for a while, we obviously don't want to lose or get embarrassed but whether we finish 13th, 14th, 15th or lower, that is already an embarrassing season for United and perhaps why Amorim continuously says that even winning the Europa League won't save it.
While we probably won't see the likes of Casemiro, Maguire, Bruno and others start, the good news is that we have others to come back like De Ligt and Amad. The manager spoke about the Ivorian and he's right, we did really miss him because he made such a difference to our team whenever he played. He sometimes singlehandedly won us matches (Southampton) and we've seen what we're like without him.
Brentford should be a game where we see him and De Ligt start which allows the likes of Maguire and Bruno to rest. United also took some youngsters with them to Bilbao as they stayed over on Friday to train which suggests that Amorim will look to start a few of them.
I'm also sure that at some point in that game, he will look to bring on some players to keep them in the rhythm ahead of next Thursday.
As for Casemiro, I said all I need to say about how impressed I've been with his resurgence. We NEED him.
