Italian giants interested in forward

This isn't the first time we've had links between Zirkzee and a return to Serie A but this time it's to the current champions and Champions League finalists Inter Milan.

The report is coming from Corriere dello Sport and they are saying that the Nerazzurri "are set to make a loan offer for Manchester United's Joshua Zirkzee. Offer will include an option to buy for €35m."

The previous links were all to Juventus but one Italian giant or another, it makes no matter as this could be a potential problem for United.

Earlier in the season, there were huge doubts over whether the Dutchman was actually good enough to play for the club. People were quick to jump on this point and it seemed to be true when Zirkzee was taken off in the first half by Ruben Amorim in United's 2-0 defeat at Old Trafford to Newcastle.

His change was met with cheers and jeers. Zirkzee was then seen almost in tears as he walked to the tunnel while the half was still on.

That wasn't a good sign at all.

However, Amorim cleared this up by saying that the forward was "suffering" during the match and that a different midfield was needed due to United being overrun by the Magpies. Kobbie Mainoo was the player who came on in the 32nd minute.

This moment pushed the narrative even more that Zirkzee was potentially heading back to Italy. There were also nonstop rumors ever since he joined United about going back to the country where he was bought from.

Yet being somehwat humiliated with that first half substitution, it appeared to spark something in him, something that looked to be defiance from the 23 year old.

His form since that match took a 180 with his double nutmeg on William Saliba and scoring the winning penalty in that shootout victory over the Gunners at the start of the year being the period when things began to change for him.

Numbers wise, it isn't anything special (not that it is with most of our players) but one could certainly see a change in attitude and a play style that showed a player playing with more confidence.

This displayed something that many United fans probably didn't associate with the Dutchman and that was a strong mindset. Very few players come back from doubt from majority of the fan basse espcially so early on in their time at a new club, not showing any signs of promise and being substituted in the first half of a game to cheers and boos from your home crowd.

Most would crumble.

Ironically though, maybe this was all meant to happen for the young forward. Maybe it was what brought out this mentality and form from him.

It was difficult to find his best position in the team however. It was clear that he was no man to lead the line but with the way Rasmus Hojlund was (and still is) performing, there was no one else.

This failed to bring the best out of a player who himself said that he is more of a false 9.

With Amorim's 3-4-2-1 formation though, perhaps there was a way out for Zirkzee.

So it came to pass that the manager began using him as one of the two no 10s. In this position, Zirkzee was flying. We started to see just what a technically gifted player he is. The former Bologna man has a casual style but one that while it may seem like he doesn't care, works really well for him.

This was seen best with those two nutmegs on one of the league's best defenders. Scoring that winning penalty will have also boosted his confidence even if he did end up missing the one in the Fulham shootout that caused us to be knocked out of the FA Cup.

Still though, he didn't let that get to him as he went on to score 2 important goals in the Europa League, one at Sociedad in the quarter final first leg and a vital header in the 2-2 draw at Lyon.

But just when people started to warm to him and we began to see some of his best attributes as a player, Zirkzee unfortunately picked up a thigh injury in the 4-1 loss in April to Newcastle that would rule him out for the rest of the season. Newcastle don't seem to be a side that Zirkzee likes playing against.

Although during a stream with former Bayern Munich teammate Alphonso Davies in which Zirkzee confirmed that he is trying his hardest to be back for Wednesday's final, those hopes seem to be a distant dream as it is highly unlikely that he will be ready to face Spurs in any capacity.

Whenever you get these rumors and links from top clubs for one of our players it is a good thing because it shows that they have something about them. But since his turn in form, this isn't the time to move him on.

He's barely played for United and while half of his time at Old Trafford he was poor, the other half was relatively decent to a point where I don't think many fans would want to see him go and are willing to give him more time especially in a system that he could flourish in.

If anything, Hojlund would be the striker that many would like to see return to Italy.

€35m for a player that United spent pretty much the same in pounds (£35m) is not what we want as we obviously lose money on someone we just signed.

And as he only joined last summer, it would be wrong to let him go so soon. I think he needs more time and next season should be a big one for him. Hopefully he stays fit.

However, as he is a player who can play in a 3-4-2-1/3-4-3, he could work at Inter as this is the same formation Simone Inzaghi uses for Milan. The Inter boss maybe looking to freshen things up with some aging midfielders in his lineup such as Henrikh Mkhitarayn and sees Zirkzee as one who could be perfect to play next to someone like Nicolo Barella as one of their two no 10s.

Would you like United to keep or sell Joshua Zirkzee?

Yeah, I can talk and talk and talk about the things I love, like football and United, as you can see in this post. Once I get on a roll, it's pretty hard to stop me. This is all coming from a guy who doesn't talk that much. How weird.
