Is £62.5m a fair or steep price for Bryan Mbeumo?

Bang for your buck, or not?

I feel like off the bat, yes, yes £62.5m for Mbeumo is a fair price but there are some factors that might make you think otherwise in this potential transfer, of which there is more development.

We know that Brentford are looking for a deal worth up to £62.5m which is the same as what United paid for Matheus Cunha from Wolves. It was reported that United have already submitted a first bid to the Bees worth £55m [Sky Sports] which falls short of what Brentford's valuation of him was.

But the latest news on this deal was that there was "Positive contacts yesterday between Manchester United and Brentford over Bryan Mbeumo. Brentford wants £60m-£65m total - of which £50m-£55m fixed.

Manchester United are now seriously considering a new package close to that amount, leveraging on add-ons " [Rudy Galetti].

We've also known that the club feel confident that they can get Mbeumo over the line and this new bid could be what does the trick.

*Update*

In the last few minutes, Fabrizio Romano has provided an update on United's revised bid for Mbeumo saying that "Manchester United again in direct club to club contact with Brentford for Bryan Mbeumo. Second proposal ready after £45m plus £10m rejected as United are ready to get closer to Cunha valuation. Mbeumo has been clear: he wants #MUFC."

With all of this noise and the player's continuous push to join only United, I'd be stunned if this deal doesn't happen.

However, is that £62.5m a fair price or are Brentford asking for too much?

There are many factors to consider such as age, expeirience in the Premier League, stats and more.

Mbeumo is 25 meaning that he isn't even in his prime yet. For a while, United have been doing this thing where they've been looking to buy players who are much too old or too young rather than those in their prime or just before it. Now with Cunha and potentially Mbeumo, we'll have two that are the right age to join the club.

Like Cunha, Mbeumo is PL proven which always ticks a box. We know how hard the league is and to have a player like him already familir with the English game is a positive. Plus he has been quite consistent in the PL as in 242 appearances, he has 70 goals and 51 assists, 20 of those goals came in the league this season. Those 20 also happen to be 1 fewer than United's entire attack of Amad, Garnacho, Hojlund and Zirkzee.

A pretty strong record indeed.

The Cameroonian international is also versatile as he can play across the front line and would be ideal for Amorim's 3-4-3, specifically the right-sided no 10.

As Cunha was sold for this price, Brentford believe that Mbeumo is worth the same as they see him as a similar type of player to the Brazilian.

However, with just a year left on his current deal, some may see this valuation as a little too high even if there is the option to extend by a further year.

This past season was incredible for the 25 year old but it absolutely outperformed anything he did previously. Mbeumo outperformed his usual xG by some distance causing people to think that this could have been a one-season wonder.

What I will add to this is while this season may be 'one of those' for him, how he and Yoane Wissa took over from Ivan Toney, who was seen as a big blow when he departed, was seamless. I don't think many noticed the influential Englahman was gone.

To be able to do that would obvioulsy increase his price that bit more.

There is also the rivals to consider as a fight for a player could cause one to have to pay slighly more than the other although Mbeumo has given the green light to United over the likes of Newcastle.

Final Thoughts

I believe there are more reasons that this is a fair price rather than we are being mugged over.

£62.5m may seem a little high for a mid-table player (although we are relegation fodder) who has one-year left on his deal and has given United the go ahead that this is where he wants to be, but considering all that he is, all that he's done, his age, and the fact that he can slot into Amorim's system quite easily, I would be happy if we paid this amount for him.

Would you agree with this £62.5m valuation from Brentford as correct? Or do you think it is a little excessive?

Yeah, I can talk and talk and talk about the things I love, like football and United, as you can see in this post. Once I get on a roll, it's pretty hard to stop me. This is all coming from a guy who doesn't talk that much. How weird.
