I mean,
YEAH!
At such a price, you would be foolish to say no to Denzel Dumfries, one of the best wing-backs in football over the past few years.
This is coming out from Fabrizio Romano who says that the Dutchman has a release clause of €25m but is only valid until mid-July with all the money having to be paid up front.
This isn't the first time we've been linked to the Dutch defender as every transfer window under former Dutch manager Erik ten Hag, we seemed to be linked with Dumfries, and every other Dutch player or ex-player of ten Hag's, eh?
While nothing definitive has come out in terms of linking United to the 29 year old, however, whenever these players are available, United's name is always associated.

We all know about this powerhouse wing-back who gets up and down the pitch with relative ease as this guy's stamina is insane.
Dumfries is very physical and strong defensively but also has a mind to be involved in attacks. He contributed 11 goals and 6 assists which included his 2 goals and 3 assists against Barcelona in those epic semifinals in the Champions League last season.
At 1.87m tall, he is also good in the air and as he can play a number of different positions (both wing-back roles, centre-back, midfield) it shows his versatility.
However, he can be found wanting in terms of his defensive discipline and isn't the best passer of the ball (78% passing accuracy in 24/25).
Considering he has played in the 3-4-3 for quite some time now, he would already slot into Ruben Amorim's system straight away. We know how important wing-backs are to this formation and is an area where United need to improve so a player like Dumfries, is what's required.
While we do have numbers in those areas (Dorgu, Dalot, Mazraoui, Shaw, Amass, Malacia can all play the wing-back positions) none of them are out-and-out wing-backs and certainly not at the level of Dumfries.
Given his physicality, stamina, ability to go up and down the pitch seamlessly and ability to play in this system, Dumfries is the perfect player for that right wing-back position of United's.
The Dutchman is not too injury prone despite picking up the odd issue. He is also super experienced having played 179 matches for Inter and made 65 caps for the Dutch national team.
Final Thoughts
I've liked this player for a while. I think we all have. The quality and experience he has suggests he is the ideal player for us and not just because of his position.
The type of character he appears to be is one of no messing about. He will also demand some respect due to all he's done and what he's achieved so far. Oppositions will feel a little more intimated by coming up against a player like him.
Wing-back isn't a top priority position for us at the moment, in my opinion. The problem is, we have so many areas of improvement that we do have to prioritise because we won't be able to sort it all out in one window.
United are in need of wing-backs and to get one of the quality and experience of Dumfries would be great but we do need to get this Mbeumo deal over the line, get in a new striker, potentially new goalkeeper and then I would be looking at wing-back although you could argue midfielder would be one spot higher in the list especially given the reports that Amorim wants an athletic no 8.
With all that being said, £21m for a player like that is a bargain, it's an abolute bargain! It's too good an opportunity to at least not try and sign him. There will no doubt be competition from other clubs (Barcelona appear the likeliest destination for the defender if he does leave) but it's still nice to try.
While his age of 29 would mean that he isn't one for the long-term, he would save time by coming into the team and not needing that settling in period. His attributes also mean a player who will have no trouble playing in the Premier League which can always find players out.
As he is a player of Inter and they want one of ours (Hojlund) perhaps there is something that we could do there?
I would make an attempt to sign Dumfries because even if we don't necessarily need a player in that position as much as we do others, it's too good a deal to pass up entirely.
Do you think United should test the waters of this deal or do we need to focus elsewhere in the team?
