So by now, you’ve probably seen the reports.
Bruno G wants to join United.
The real United 😁.
Alright, the report doesn’t exactly say that… but let’s be honest, it might as well.
This comes from Marco Alcaraz, who claims that “Bruno Guimarães has decided to leave Newcastle this summer and is open to joining Manchester United", [UnitedUpdate].
Now, Alcaraz isn’t the most well-known nor reliable source out there, so normally you’d take that with a pinch of salt.
But when Fabrizio Romano comes out and confirms that "a meeting took place between Guimarães’ agents and United a few weeks ago", it suddenly feels a bit more real 👀, [FrankEra].
So… Does It Actually Make Sense?
Short answer?
Yes. Yes it does.
United need midfielders. Not one, probably two or three if we’re being honest. And Bruno Guimarães fits what we’re lacking almost perfectly.
He’s 28, which puts him right in his prime. Not a project, not someone you have to wait on, but also not someone who’s on the decline. He’s experienced, Premier League-proven and has been one of the most consistent midfielders in the league over the past few years.
In terms of injuries, there’s nothing too alarming either. He’s had the odd issue, including a recent hamstring problem, but he’s not someone you look at and immediately worry about availability.
So from a profile perspective, it already makes sense.
Bruno G mainly plays as a number 8 but can drop deeper at times, which is something United desperately need.
He’s comfortable on the ball, press-resistant and always willing to receive it even under pressure. He can control tempo, dictate play from deep and progress the ball either through passing or by carrying it forward himself.
But what I really like about him is the edge he brings.
He’s a bit of a shithouse.
And United need that.
Too often we look like a team that’s easy to play against. Too nice, too passive, too willing to let games happen instead of disrupting them. Bruno Guimarães isn’t like that. He’ll get stuck in, wind players up and make himself a nuisance.
He’s the kind of player you hate when he’s against you… and love when he’s on your side.
This isn’t just about aggression and energy either.
Technically, he’s top class.
He can play through the lines, switch play, pick out runners and keep things ticking. At Newcastle, he’s often the one everything goes through. He drops deep, gets on the ball and moves the team up the pitch.
He’s basically their heartbeat.
Very similar to our own Bruno.
And when you look at the numbers, it backs that up. Newcastle without him this season have been significantly worse. In 16 matches this season without him, Newcastle have won just five.
That is a win percentage of 31%. When he does feature though, that number goes up to 51% in 35 matches.
The drop-off in results is noticeable, and that tells you just how important he is to everything they do.
He’s not just a good player — he’s their player.
And he’s their captain as well, another trait he shares with his MUFC namesake. This also says a lot about his leadership and influence.
This is where it really clicks though.
Look at two of our best players this season — Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo. Both came in with Premier League experience, both are in that mid-to-late 20s bracket and neither needed time to adapt.
They just slotted in and performed.
Bruno Guimarães fits that exact profile.
There’s no settling period, no excuses. He comes in and raises the level straight away. And with someone like Kobbie Mainoo still developing, having a player like Guimarães could actually help his game rather than leave him exposed.
When it comes to his price, reports suggest he’d cost around €80m.
It’s a lot, no doubt. But with two years left on his contract, it’s not completely unrealistic either.
Newcastle, on the other hand, aren’t in the best place right now. They’re out of Europe, out of the cups and are well behind in the race for the top five. The consistency just hasn’t been there, and the overall trajectory isn’t exactly convincing.
At some point, a player of Guimarães’ level is going to start thinking about what’s next.
Because let’s be real — he’s better than where Newcastle are currently.
And at 28, this next move is a big one.
Yes, United aren’t perfect. Far from it.
But compared to Newcastle right now, we can offer more.
There’s the possibility of Champions League football, a bigger platform, better players around him and, realistically, a bigger contract as well.
And then there’s the badge.
No matter how messy things have been, Manchester United still carries a certain pull.
Final Thoughts
Would he be my absolute first choice?
No. He wouldn't. I do like Sandro Tonali and even Elliot Anderson as options ahead of him but if United sign Bruno Guimarães, I’m not complaining.
He improves us. Immediately.
Adds quality, adds leadership, adds that bit of nastiness we’ve been missing in midfield for a while.
And sometimes, that’s exactly what you need.
So…
Bruno G alongside the real Bruno at the real United? Would you like to see that?
Or are you still not convinced?
